When you add your name to your state's donor registry, you have authorized the gift of your organs and tissues upon your death. Why register your decision? It’s legal authorization and protects your family from having to decide for you at a time of loss and grief. Please tell your family you registered as a donor, so they know now that you want the opportunity to help others later.

I've been sick, can I donate?
At the time of donation, medical professionals will assess your organs to see if they can be transplanted. People with cancer, HIV and other diseases have been donors. Everyone older than age 15 can register as a donor.
Does my religion support donation?
All major religions in the U.S. support organ, eye and tissue donation and consider it a final act of love and generosity toward others.
I drink alcohol, can I still donate?
If you become a donor, medical professionals will use standard medical tests to see if your organs can be transplanted. Don’t let this stop you from registering as a donor.

Real world inspiration
Vern Maly became an organ and tissue donor and started a chain reaction that affected thousands of people. He was the first organ donor at Sauk Prairie Hospital, and the team there created a video of his Honor Walk to the operating room that was viewed by more than 40,000 people on YouTube. Complete strangers registered as organ donors because they were touched by Vern's story.

Established in 1966, UW Organ and Tissue Donation (UW OTD) is one of 58 federally designated not-for-profit organ procurement organizations in the nation. We are dedicated and compassionate experts who serve deceased organ and tissue donors and their families. With great respect and kindness, we support donors and their families as members of our UW OTD family.
Our team is passionate about service, innovation and education. We work with community partners to promote the importance of registering your organ and tissue donation decision on your state registry. We are a hospital-based organ procurement organization with UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin.
